A truly outstanding, fully instrumental 1974 album credited to the legendary Czech trumpeter and the accompanying band-orchestra – Konstelace Josefa Vobruby. Active in numerous Czechoslovak big bands, Václav Týfa was, among other things, the trumpet-section leader on the excellent jazz-rock album Blue Effect – Nova synteza. Stylistically, this LP sits somewhere between the exhilarating big-band jazz-rock in the vein of Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chase or Chicago, and a weighty, riff-driven, highly improvised brand of rock. There are also passages rooted in psychedelia and even Latin music. Alongside the ever-present brass parts, the instrumentation features juicy Hammond organ, sparkling Fender piano, floating Moog synthesizer motifs, and even harpsichord figures. It’s also worth noting the guest appearances by well-known Czech rock musicians: the brilliant Radim Hladík from Blue Effect, Petr Janda from Olympic, and Jiří Urbánek from Flamengo. Side A of the original vinyl album is filled with a six-part, 18-minute suite for trumpet and orchestra, quite loosely based on motifs reaching back to the Czech Baroque era. Side B offers six intriguingly arranged pieces from the repertoire of Blood, Sweat & Tears. The entire album has been remastered directly from Supraphon’s original master tapes. Standard jewel-case edition with a 16-page booklet, packed with colour photos and an essay in Polish and English. A must-have for anyone who enjoys no-nonsense jazz-rock with a harder rock edge and plenty of brass!
